A warm July wedding in the most colorful island in Greece, Kastellorizo
For the second time we travelled to our favorite island in Greece, Kastellorizo! "Only" 24 hours sailing from Athens or a short flight via Rhodes brought us back to this mesmerizing island for the wedding of Niki and Stewart. They brought all their closest friends and family from Australia over to celebrate their 3 day wedding experience. The wedding took place in the middle of a square in front of Poseidon Hotel. Logistics are the difficult part on this island, as ferries are not as frequent as on other islands and flying is only possible with a small 36-seater. Flowers came in 3 days before the wedding, so we had to keep them refrigerated in one of the taverns fridges (and water them every night!) and all venders came early to the island, to make sure that we were there in time. This made us, together with Niki, Stewart and their family and friends and the small group of locals on the island, one big family.
Niki and Stewart have their roots in Kastellorizo and decided on a wedding with lots of traditional Kastellorizian influences. The Saturday night (Savatovratho) traditionally consist out of a few things such as singing the Votania. The guests are going on a boat with the couple to sing the wedding songs and after that the single women are going to make the Moschokarfia, a necklace from cloves. From the cloves a syrup is made, this syrup was used to wash the grooms hair. After that, the wedding clothes were smoked.
